Grace Niewijk, the OPRF student who took first place in a Midwest Science Competition this month for her antibacterial bandage made from hagfish slime, recently took another science honor.
Niewijk recently won third place at a national science symposium. The OPRF senior used web-like, silk threads from the slime to make her bandage patches. Our paper profiled her on April 23, and OakPark.com features Q&As and videos featuring her eight of her fellow OPRF classmates discussing their classroom projects.
In the interview, Niewijk mentioned how funny it was that some many of her classmates were “grossed out” by there own projects, like one student who refused to touch the coach roaches used in his experiment. Niewijk says she wasn’t grossed out by her hagfish.
Responses to her project have been mostly amazement from people impressed by such work from a high schooler, she said.
