Friars hold off Marmion on gridiron

Three top playmakers on offense pave way to victory

Danny Cronin, Michael O'Laughlin and Jason Ivery all turned in stellar performances to power Fenwick past Marmion 47-36 in a Chicago Catholic League Green Division shootout.

Cronin, the Friars' promising sophomore quarterback, completed 15 of 18 passes for 158 yards and ran 15 times for 74 yards. He accounted for a pair of touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. O'Laughlin had 10 receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown and Avery rushed for 182 yards and two TDs on 30 carries.

Wide receiver Jack Polston chipped in four catches for 59 yards.

Defensively, Thomas Hogan led Fenwick with 5.5 tackles, while Gavin Ortiz, Michael Leopold and Joseph Daley tallied three tackles apiece. Solomon Singelton had an interception.

Fenwick raced out to a 34-7 lead before the Cadets rallied to make the final score much closer.

With the Friars up 10-7 early in the second quarter, Ivery extended the lead to 17-7 on a 20-yard TD run. Kicker Bryan Dowd added a field goal to make the score 20-7 with 2:30 left until halftime. Cronin capped off an excellent first half with a 10-yard touchdown run, giving Fenwick a 27-7 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Ivery scored again from 20 yards out to complete the Friars' run of 24 unanswered points and a 34-7 advantage.

Marmion outscored Fenwick 29-13 the rest of the way.

O'Laughlin caught a 30-yard pass to put Fenwick up 41-14.

With the win, the Friars are 4-2 overall with a 1-1 record in the CCL Green. Marmion falls to 5-1 and 2-1 in the CCL Green.

Fenwick faces a tough road game next, at Providence Catholic (4-2) on Friday, Oct. 6 in a CCL crossover. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
