The driver of a vehicle that caused a car crash that killed two people in Oak Park on March 9, had been drinking and was under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamines, according to a police report.
Oak Park police pulled over Kendall R. Harrison at about 10:30 p.m. on the night of the crash near the intersection South Boulevard and Humphrey Avenue.
He fled in his white Volkswagen Toureg and at the intersection at Ridgeland broadsided the vehicle driven by Joy Tyus, who died of her injuries the night of the accident. Tyus boyfriend, Pierre Shelton, was critically injured and also died of his injuries a little over a week later.
Harrison’s police arrest report, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by the Journal, noted that his blood alcohol level was .038, which is under the legal limit of .08, but blood tests detected marijuana and methamphetamines.
Police also noted in the report that a search of Harrison produced “two pink tablets shaped like poop emojis that tested positive for the synthetic drug MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.
The police report reveals that Harrison attempted to flee on foot after the crash but was captured by police.
The report notes that Harrison’s license had been revoked and he could not produce proof of insurance.
Harrison was charged with one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence.
